Pump Trouble Shooting Guide

Possible Causes

Pump will not prime
  1. No water in strainer
  2. Strainer pot lid is not tight
  3. Damaged lid o-ring
  4. Water level is below skimmer
  5. Strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged
  6. Closed valve in piping system
  7. Pump is on low speed (two-speed units only)
  8. Air leak in suction line
Low flow - High Filter Pressure
  1. Filter is dirty
  2. Restriction in return line
  3. Bad pressure gauge
Low flow - Low filter pressure
  1. Strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged
  2. Clogged  pump impeller
  3. Air leak in suction line
  4. Restriction in suction line
  5. Bad pressure gauge
Motor does not turn
  1. Power switch is off
  2. Circuit breaker is tripped
  3. Pump is in "off" mode of a timer controlled circuit
  4. Motor terminal connections are incorrect
  5. Motor shaft is locked by bad bearing
  6. Impeller is locked by debris

Water Trouble Shooting Guide Cause Solution
Cloudy water Circulation Run filter 24 hours a day
Dirty filter Backwash and clean filter with filter cleaner
Calcium hardness level too high Drain 1 inch and refill with fresh water retest then continue cycle until hardness reaches 200-250 PPM
Chlorine level low Test and adjust automatic chlorinator or manually add chlorine
Combined chlorine or chloramines Test chlorine level and adjust.  Shock pool
Microscopic particles passing through filter Use Clarifier to increase particle size
pH too high Test pH and add pH minus per label instructions
Green water Cloudy green - Green algae Shock Treat Pool.  Use Algaecide to kill existing algae and prevent further growth
Clear green - Copper Use metal removing chemical to control staining.  Check for low pH and add pH plus if needed
Reddish-brown water Iron or manganese Use metal removing chemical to control staining.  Add clarifier to enhance filtering capabilities.  For severe conditions, use a flocking agent to remove iron.
Black spots Black algae Use algaecide, Chlorinate heavily with shock.  Brush spots twice daily until they disappear
Skin & eye irritation Combined chlorine level too high Shock treat to remove organic wastes
pH too high or too low Test pH and adjust with pH plus Or pH Minus as needed
